Case Study: OneSchool Global, Fosters, and Ecodome Deliver a Sustainable Foundation Solution

Project Overview:

Recently OneSchool Global, a leading global education provider, embarked on a project to recently extend the learning center in Eureka, in the mighty Waikato. Fosters Construction, one of the country's leading construction companies, was selected as the lead contractor. With an eye on making sustainable decisions throughout the build process, collectively they engaged Cupolex Ecodome for their innovative foundation system to minimise environmental impact and maximise efficiency.

Challenge:

Traditional polystyrene waffle pods are widely used in foundation construction, despite presenting significant environmental challenges. They generate substantial waste, require extensive transportation, and often result in on-site debris that can pollute waterways. OneSchool Global and Fosters sought a sustainable alternative that would align with their environmental values.

Solution:

Ecodome's innovative system provided the ideal solution. Made from 100% recycled materials right here in New Zealand, Ecodome domes offer superior structural strength, cost-effectiveness and ease of installation, compared to polystyrene pods.

Key Project Details:

  • Foundation Area: 962m2

  • Ecodome Transportation: 23 pallets (1.2m x 1.2m x 1.2m), total 40m3, delivered on one truck.

  • Polystyrene Pod Equivalent: 135 pallets, the equivalent of 3 truck and trailer loads, total 180m3.

Benefits:

  • Reduced Site Traffic: Ecodome's compact design resulted in a 77% reduction in space required on-site and two-thirds (1 delivery vs 3) less site traffic compared to polystyrene pods. This minimised disruption to the surrounding environment and improved construction efficiency.

  • Zero Waste: Ecodome requires no cutting on-site, eliminating waste and the risk of debris polluting waterways and the surrounding environment.

  • Faster Installation: The pre-formed domes are quick and easy to install, saving time and labor costs.

  • Sustainable Solution: Ecodome's recycled materials aligned perfectly with OneSchool Global and Fosters' commitment to environmental responsibility.

Outcomes:

  • Reduced Environmental Impact: The project significantly reduced waste, transportation needs, and on-site disruption compared to traditional methods.

  • Improved Efficiency: Ecodome's system streamlined the construction process, saving time and resources.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: The efficient design and installation of Ecodome contributed to overall project cost savings.

  • Sustainable Building Practices: The project demonstrated a commitment to sustainable building practices, setting an example for future developments.

Conclusion:

The collaboration between OneSchool Global, Fosters, and Ecodome showcases the successful implementation of an innovative and sustainable foundation solution. By choosing Ecodome's system, they were able to minimise environmental impact, improve efficiency, and achieve a high-quality outcome for the new learning center. This project serves as a testament to the benefits of prioritising sustainability in construction and demonstrates the potential for eco-friendly alternatives to become the standard in the industry.
