Case Study: Ecodome and Sanderson Group Partner on Sustainable Foundations for Tamahere Country Club

Project Overview

Recently, the Tamahere Country Club, a prestigious development, embarked on a project to construct 275 luxury individual retirement villas, with an average foundation size of 220m2, totalling 60,500m2, in the Waikato region., Sanderson Group has been at the forefront of luxury retirement living in New Zealand. As pioneers in the market, they are committed to providing beautifully designed, luxury retirement properties.   With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, they engaged Cupolex Ecodome for their innovative foundation system to minimise environmental impact.

Challenge

Traditional polystyrene pods, commonly used in foundation construction, present significant environmental and logistical challenges. They generate substantial waste, require extensive transportation, and often result in on-site debris. For a large-scale development like the Tamahere Country Club, these challenges would be amplified. Nathan Sanderson sought a sustainable and efficient alternative that would align with the project's scope and environmental considerations.

Solution

Ecodome's innovative system provided the ideal solution. Made from 100% recycled materials right here in New Zealand, Ecodome domes offer superior structural strength, cost-effectiveness, and ease of installation, compared to polystyrene pods.

Key Project Details

  • Foundation Area: 60,500m2 (275 individual villas, avg. 220m2)

  • Polystyrene Pods: Had the project decided to use polystyrene it would have required 42,016 pods, 8402 pallets, 150 Full Truck and Trailer Loads (FTL)

  • Cupolex Ecodome: By choosing Ecodome’s innovative, 100% recycled plastic system they only required 1163 pallets and 20 FTL!! You can’t argue with those numbers.

Benefits

  • Reduced Transportation: Ecodome's system significantly reduced transportation requirements, requiring only 20 FTL compared to 150 FTL for polystyrene pods. This minimised traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and associated emissions.

  • Reduced Pallet Usage: Ecodome required only 1163 pallets, a substantial reduction from the 8402 pallets needed for polystyrene pods. This saved on material costs and waste.

  • Increased Efficiency: Ecodome's design and ease of installation streamlined the construction process, saving significant time and labour costs on a large-scale project.

  • Sustainable Solution: Ecodome's recycled materials and reduced environmental impact aligned perfectly with the development's commitment to sustainability.

Outcomes

  • Significant Logistical Improvements: The project demonstrated substantial improvements in logistics and transportation efficiency, crucial for a large-scale development.

  • Reduced Environmental Footprint: Ecodome's system significantly reduced the project's environmental footprint, minimising waste and transportation-related impacts.

  • Efficient Construction Process: The use of Ecodome streamlined the foundation construction, contributing to the project's overall efficiency.

  • Sustainable Development: The project showcases a commitment to sustainable development practices, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of using eco-friendly alternatives.

Conclusion:

The partnership between Sanderson group and Ecodome at the Tamahere Country Club exemplifies the successful implementation of sustainable and efficient foundation solutions in a large-scale residential development. By choosing Ecodome's system, they were able to achieve significant logistical improvements, reduce the project's environmental impact, and contribute to the creation of a modern, sustainable community. This project stands as a powerful example of how innovative building solutions can drive efficiency and sustainability in the construction industry.
